Specimen #1: A newly emerged adult Zanna terminalis lantern bug. Note the still crumpled wings.


Note the longer wings in this image.It pumped liquid to its wings to fully expand them.

Done, but still needed to wait for the wings and exoskeleton to harden.

Lantern fly

Another lantern fly added to my collection. The species count now stands at 9. It is not exactly a new species for me since I had photographed a nymph of this lovely Zanna sp. back in Oct 3, 2009. Yes, it took me a little more than three years before I finally had the luck to come across an adult Zanna sp. lantern fly!

I spent 4 hours and took like 300 images of this exotic beauty!

All images taken with a Sigma 150mm, 1.4x Kenko teleconverter and cheap tripod, fully natural light. (except the nymph images)

Lanternfly with parasitic flies

I didn't notice the parasitic flies (Ceratopogonidae?) on this Pyrops oculata lanternfly / lantern bug when I took this image. Only noticed the flies when reviewing the images on my laptop. 


I went to check on this lanternfly again 4 days later and the parasitic flies were still bugging this poor guy.

I made this short clip from a few stills and a short video from my trust point and shoot (compact camera). Enjoy!

This poor Pyrops oculata lanterfly was clearly bugged by the parasitic flies. Watch the clip and see how the lanternfly used its right front leg to chase the flies away. The flies kept coming back though.

Lantern bug / lantern fly is among my most favorite macro subjects. Whenever I find one, I  spend hours and hours photographing it, or just admire its spectacular beauty!

Pyrops transversolineatus. Flew into the canteen in Danum Valley Field Center and was captured by a research student and kept in a vial. My friend and I looked for this in the field the following couple of days but no luck.
